Consulate to stop sales
PA Wellington Commercial tourist sales will no longer be a function of the New Zealand consu-late-general in San Francisco, said the Minister of Tourism, Mr Moore, yesterday. The Government accepted the position of the United States that commercial sales activity for tourism should not be done under a “diplomatic umbrella.” Earlier this year the
State Department complained about commercial activities by the Tourist and Publicity Department from the consulate. “The State Department has been advised that this activity will end and discussions are being held in Washington on the date,” Mr Moore said. The State Department’s position applied to all countries, not just New Zealand. “A final decision on what
we do commercially in North America has yet to be made, but my understanding is that provided we are not operating under a consular or diplomatic umbrella, what we do is of no particular concern to the State Department.” One option was to consider an extension of Tourist and Publicity’s computerised travel system into the North American market, he said.
