Fatal car accident
A man died early yesterday after the car he was driving left the road in Locksley Avenue near the Gayhurst Road Bridge, struck a tree, and plunged into the Avon River. He was John Hone Timoti, aged 22, a soldier based at Burnham Military Camp, but formerly of Auckland. Attempts by a passer-by and three policemen to rescue Mr Timoti from the car failed. The body was removed from the vehicle after it was hauled from the river by a tow truck.
