Company secretary found guilty

A former company secretary was found guilty by a jury in the District Court last evening on 22 charges of making false declarations under the Sales Tax Act. The defendant, Neville Munro Todd, aged 46, a former accountant and secretary of a Christchurch electrical engineering firm, Thomas L. Jones, Ltd, had denied the 22 charges, in which more than $BO,OOO in sales tax was said to have been undeclared. The charges related to morfthly returns of sales tax payable in 22 months between July, 1979, and October, 1982. On the jury’s verdict, reached after a retirement of four hours, Judge Pain remanded the defendant on bail to July 26 for sentence.
