Fisherman might act against Govt
Westport reporter A Westport fisherman, Mr Ron Pearson, is considering taking legal actibn to prevent the Government from introducing the controversial individual transferable quota (1.T.Q.) and total allowable catch (T.A.C.) systems. Mr Pearson took legal
advice on the matter after a meeting of fishermen in Westport on Wednesday which discussed Government proposals for the management of New Zealand’s inshore fisheries. The meeting voted against any change to the I.T.Q. and T.A.C. systems. Mr Pearson has been advised that the Government has no legal basis for forcing the fishermen to accept the new systems. He believes he could successfully take out a High Court injunction to prevent their introduction. However, such legal action is likely to be expensive and Mr Pearson will consider the matter carefully before making a final decision.
