Triathlete has success

The Christchurch triathlete, John Hellemans has added some variety to his training for events in Europe by competing in the worla medical games in Monaco. Hellemans, a general practitioner in Christchurch, entered a number of individual swimming, running and cycling events at the games with considerable success. He won the 1500 swim in 18min 595; was second in the 400 m swim in 4min 495; third in the half marathon in Ih 12min 565; fourth in the 5000 m in 16min 295; and seventh, after puncturing, in the 80km road cycling. The cycling event, with its scenery and views, was the most enjoyable of the events, Hellemans said in a letter to friends. His next triathlon is the European short course championship in West Germany on July 27. Erin Baker, also from Christchurch, and one of the world’s top ranked women, will compete in the women’s section.
