Sprinter surprises

NZPA-AFP Villard de Lans The sprint specialist, Eric Vanderaerden, of Belgium, was a surprise winner of the 31.8 km time trial which formed yesterday’s thirteenth stage of the Tour de France cycling road race. Vanderaerden, a team-mate of Australia’s Phil Anderson, led the tour for three days early on, but was deprived of his first stage victory when he was

penalised for an exchange of shoves with Ireland’s Sean Kelly. The Belgian rode early in the day, when there was little wind and had an average speed of 45km/h. The over-all leader, Bernard Hinault, of France, who usually wins time trials with consummate ease, was handicapped by gusting winds when he set off late in the afternoon and was more than a minute slower.
