R.J.’s career could be over

PA Auckland The 35-year career of the jockey, Bob Skelton, could be over. Skelton, aged 50, is in traction in St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, after breaking his right leg in a fall at Moonee Valley on Wednesday. According to his brother, Bill, who spoke to Skelton’s wife, Maureen, yesterday: “It could be the finish of him.” “It’s a bad break, just below where he broke it at New Plymouth in 1978,” Bill

said. “Maureen says they probably can't pin this one, they’re operating today and will probably screw it together. “Bob’s had a bad run since November, with four or five falls.” Skelton crashed heavily on Wednesday when his mount clipped the heels of another horse in the Labertouche Handicap. Apart from his broken leg, he has “a lot of grazes on his hands” but is otherwise in a satisfactory condition.
