CZE3 Director-General Television The Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand is a statutory body charged with the management of six divisional operations: TVNZ, RNZ, the Listener, the NZ Symphony Orchestra, BCNZ Enterprises — the marketing arm for TVNZ & RNZ, and Resource Services. Revenues derived primarily from advertising sales and licence fees presently approximate some NZ$22O million, with an operating surplus of approximately NZ$2O million. The Corporation is unique in that it operates two commercial TV stations and a radio network of some 36 commercial radio stations, the latter being in active competition with private radio and with a third private TV channel about to be authorised. The Corporation is managed by a full-time Chief Executive, Director Generals of TV and Radio, and General Managers of Resource Services, the NZ Symphony Orchestra, BCNZ Enterprises and the editor of the Listener. Its operations are overseen by a Board consisting of a part-time Chairman, and eight board members. Due to the retirement of the DirectorGeneral, Television, we seek a suitably qualified individual to fill this position. The successful candidate would be joining at a time of significant challenge and opportunity, given the changes taking place in the Corporation’s operating environment. RESPONSIBILITIES The Director-General, Television, is responsible to the Chief Executive of the Corporation for the profitable operation of the service in accordance with agreed plans and budgets. The Director-General, Television, will be a member of the Executive Committee and support the Chief Executive in presenting his/her service’s programmes to the Board. • Provides advice to the Chief Executive on industry issues/ developments likely to warrant changes in corporation policies/plans. • Develops strategic plans for review with the Chief Executive in accordance with agreed objectives. • Oversees the day-to-day management of the service. • Develops divisional capital and operating plans/budgets to implement the agreed strategy. • Develops appropriate action programmes to respond to operating anomalies. • Implements such personnel, financial and organisational policies and plans within his/her division as are laid down by the Chief Executive and Board. QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate for the Director-General, Television role will have a demonstrated track record of successfully managing a large broadcasting based organisation in a competitive environment. Probably aged late 30’s — early 40’s, the successful candidate will have: • Tertiary qualifications evidenced by a degree. Post graduate qualifications in communications would be an advantage. • Demonstrated track record of innovation as a broadcaster. • The breadth of vision necessary to deal with a multi-cultural audience profile. • Team leadership and management qualities evidenced by the profitable development and operation of a substantial broadcasting based business. An understanding and experience of New Zealand culture would be an advantage. COMPENSATION This is the top post in New Zealand Television. As such, it therefore commands, by most criteria, an exceedingly attractive package within a renewable 5 year contract.
