Soviet Union’s war record
Sir,—The debt owed by all of us to the Soviet Union’s contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany clearly sticks in the craw of inveterate haters of the Soviet Union such as J. B. Simmonds (July 12). His ability to claim the great defensive battles of Moscow, Stalingrad and the Kursk salient as “fighting a war of conquest equalling Germany in brutality” shows the lengths to which J. B. Simmonds and his kind will go to pervert the truth about the Soviet Union. The Warsaw uprising was the responsibility of the London Polish Government, which sought to pre-empt Warsaw’s liberation by the Red Army by ordering an illadvised uprising, knowing that the Red Army would have to pause, after a long pursuit of the Wehrmacht, for regrouping. It is a safe bet that J. B. Simmonds, as “one old enough to remember” was relieved and jubilant, at the time, for the resounding victories of the Red Army over the Nazi Wehrmacht.—Yours, etc., M. CREEL. July 11, 1985.
