Soviet Union’s war record
Sir, — Obviously Susan Taylor does not belong to the generation that knew the fears the very name of Joseph Stalin could arouse. This tyrant inflicted more killings and torture on his own people that did the German Army. He “purged” the Red Army of leaders which was one reason for its initial defeats and appalling casualties. We remember the agonising weeks the Soviets sat at the gates of Warsaw while the Poles, and Jews battled the German Army, communist puppets waiting to enslave the Tenants. Those who are old enough to remember do not trust the smiling face of Russia sitting with one foot on Afghanistan threatening Pakistan, the other in East Germany threatening Western Europe. Russia suffered 20 million casualties fighting a war of conquest, equalling Germany in brutality, not defence. Let them withdraw and only then will we have real peace. — Yours, etc., J. B. SIMMONDS. July 8, 1985.
