Bands to gather for big charity concert
Cathedral Square will vibrate with the rhythms of at least seven Christchurch bands playing at a special Africa awareness charity concert on Saturday afternoon. The concert has been organised by U.S. (Unity is Strength) in support of the 17-hour world rock concert, Live Aid, which will begin on an international satellite link-up at 11 p.m. on Saturday. Local bands taking part
in the Christchurch concert include, Pachamama, which plays traditional South American music, Pyramid, Hidden Wind, Axemen, Connoisseurs, Natural Magic, Speaking Jivanese, and the U.S. Band, which was formed specially for the concert. A donation box in the shape of a big letter-box will be set up in the Square, where donations could be made, said a member of U.S., Mr Tony Brown.
Any money raised at the concert would be given to the African Famine Relief Fund, said Mr Brown. The concert will be held in Christchurch Cathedral if it is raining on the day. U.S. is a co-operative organisation, which was initially formed to promote a united spirit in the community, said Mr Brown. U.S. hopes to be able to organise other charity concerts for other worth-while causes in the future.
