Man guilty of receiving
Richard Jeffrey Georg Barker, aged 29, unemployed, was found guilty by a jury in the District Court yesterday of receiving stolen rings valued at $10,692. Barker had denied charges of receiving between January 11 and February 26 27 rings, valued at $BBl6, previously stolen from Crescent Jewellers, New Brighton Mall; and receiving between February 14 and 26 seven rings, valued at $1876, previously stolen from Harrington Jewellers, Riccarton Road. Barker was found guilty on both charges. The trial began on Tuesday before Judge Pain. Mr B. M. Stanaway appeared for the Crown and Mr C. B. Atkinson, Q.C., for the defendant. Prosecution and defence counsel addressed the jury yesterday and Judge Pain summed up. To find Barker guilty on the receiving charges, the jury had to be convinced the rings were stolen, and that Barker received the rings and knew they were stolen when he received them, the Judge said. That the rings were stolen was not contested, he said.
The jury had to be convinced that Barker received the rings knowing them to be stolen. Barker was remanded for sentence on a date to be fixed.
