Mr Neary against union coercion
PA Wellington The Secretary of the Electrical Workers’ Union, Mr Tony Neary, says workers should join their unions, but they should not be coerced into joining. In an interview 10 days after the Labour Government’s reintroduction of compulsory unionism, Mr Neary said, “No-one likes compulsion.” He was a critic of the voluntary unionism provisions introduced in the Industrial Relations Amendment Act by the former Minister of Labour, Mr
Bolger. Mr Neary says several aspects of Mr Bolger’s legislation were repugnant, apart from the voluntary membership issue. Workers should belong to unions, he said, and a good union should, be able to sell itself and convince workers of the benefits to be gained from being a member. He said his union, which disaffiliated from the Federation of Labour last year, had retained most of its 10,500 membership throughout the 18 months of voluntary unionism.
