75 years jail for theft of 16 turkeys
NZPA-AP Lubbock, Texas A man with two previous burglary convictions was sentenced to 75 years jail after a jury found him guilty of stealing 16 frozen turkeys from a parked trac-tor-trailer.
The jury took only 12 minutes to convict Harold Mackey, aged 31, of Lubbock, of charges of stealing JUS2OO (?NZ422) worth of turkey from the refrigerated truck outside a restaurant last November. Jurors deliberated another 20 minutes the next day before returning the 75year sentence. “That might have been a tad high in light of the crime. That’s a bit stiff for a vehicle burglary,” said the defence lawyer, Mr Brian Murray, who argued during summation that a 25-year sentence would be more than 1% years per turkey. Mackey could have received life or from 25 to 99 years in jail.
