Zoo killings trial
NZPA-AAP Adelaide Two teenagers have been committed for trial on charges of killing 64 animals in the children’s section of Adelaide Zoo in March. Mr Richard Brown, S.bJ- yesterday committed Paul Anthony Jaensch and Roger Lynn Hazel to the Central District Criminal Court.
The 18-year-olds said that they wanted to reserve their defence. A date for the trial has yet to be fixed. Earlier a police prosecutor tendered to the Court signed police records of an interview, which indicated that both men had admitted going to the zoo that night to slaughter animals.
Hazel and Jaensch are jointly charged with unlawfully and maliciously killing three rhea, an alligator, an Indian antelope, one Kangaroo Island kangaroo, three red and four western grey kangaroos, 12 rabbits, 17 guinea pigs, seven chickens, a duck, a pigeon, and three turkeys. A second charge alleged that on the same day they unlawfully and maliciously killed a llama, eight sheep, and two goats; and a further charge alleged that they broke into the zoo kiosk and stole confectionary valued at ?AustlOO. According to the police interviews both men denied sexually assaulting the animals, or consuming alcohol or drugs beforehand.
