Funds sought to help family
Two Christchurch groups have responded to an appeal for funds by Greenpeace after explosions sank the protest boat Rainbow Warrior in Auckland Harbour late on Wednesday evening. Canterbury Environment Centre and Christchurch Peace Forum have organised a stall in Cathedral Square today. The money collected would go into a trust for the family of the Portuguese photographer killed, Mr Fernando Pereira, said the centre coordinator, Ms Leigh Cookson, yesterday. “Some of the money will also be used to salvage and repair the Rainbow Warrior,” she said. “As far as I know the voyage to Mururoa Atoll, planned for the boat and accompanying vessels, will still go ahead.” Every effort would be made to repair the Rainbow Warrior to seaworthy condition in time for the voyage. The Greenpeace 111 vessel Vega was still scheduled to go to Mururoa to protest against the French nuclear tests, she said. Most of the vessels had
been due to leave Auckland on July 21 to arrive at Rarotonga in time for the meeting of Pacific Forum nations Ms Cookson said. “They were then scheduled to continue on to Mururoa Atoll, with the arrival date set at Hiroshima Day on August 6,” she said.
