Chinese actions on Ice studied

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington Reports of Chinese misconduct in Antarctica are being investigated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Reports (“The Press,” July 2) have come from West German scientists suggesting that the Chinese mistreated birds and eggs in Antarctica last summer, which have been denied by the Government of the People’s Republic of China. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Lange, has told Parliament that his officials were trying to discover the substance, if any, of the allegations made. Inquiries have been made of New Zealand’s fellow members of the Antarctic Treaty and also through its post in Peking. Mr Lange said the Government could not take steps to prevent similar occurrences and to protect Antarctic wildlife and the environment unless and until the reports had been verified.
