Post Office charges

Sir,—The increase in Post Office charges at an average of 7 per cent coming hard on the heels of the Post Office housing loan fiasco, will not put the Post Office in a good light with the public. This is unfortunate, as the Government’s action in taxing Post Office profits to the tune of SISOM triggered off these increases. The Consumer Institute’s concern that it is just another way for the Government to collect tax has prompted their own investigation. Mr Douglas keeps saying that the public has suffered the pain of his financial policies and then turns the screw again. No wonder Mr Jim Anderton has publicly stated his alarm at Government policies and that the Government is trying desperately to gag him. — Yours, etc., J. F. GARVEY, Westport. July 3, 1985.
