Five from Canty in Junior Kiwis
By JOHN COFFEY Five Canterbury players have been included in the New Zealand Junior Kiwis rugby league team announced yesterday to tour Australia between August 22 and September 16. The selections of Kami Shelford, Terry Hermanson, Michael Stewart and Esene Faimalo emphasises the emerging forward talent in the south. The only Canterbury back to be named was Andrew Vincent, who recently captained the provincial 19 years team against Wellington from the centres. Shelford — a younger brother of the South Island representative Adrian Shelford — and Stewart are in) their
second season with the team, having travelled to Western Australia last year. The other “second-timers” are the captain and prop, James Goulding (Auckland), and an outside back, Iva Ropati (Auckland). In company with Shelford and Stewart, Vincent played for the Junior Kiwis in their win over the Bay of Plenty senior side earlier this winter. Hermanson and Vincent were team-mates in the 1984 national 17 years squad, while Faimalo’s forceful running against Wellington strongly advanced his claims. The Junior Kiwis coach and co-selector, Bob Hall, said yesterday that two additional players might be added after
confirmation of the itinerary by the Australian Rugby League. The team, to be managed by Messrs Laurie Knight (Canterbury) and Max Williams (Auckland) is:— Michael Grylls, Michael Patton, Iva Ropati, Kelly Shelford, George Thompson, Dean Birch (all Auckland), Vaun O’Callaghan (Waikato), Tony Kemp (Taranaki), Gary. Mercer (Bay of Plenty), Andrew Vincent (Canterbury), Philip Campbell (West Coast), Chris Chadwick, Daniel Kolose, James Goulding (captain), Graeme Reynolds (all Auckland), Hami Shelford, Terry Hermanson, Esene Faimalo, Michael Stewart (all Canterbury), Tawera Nikau (Waikato).
