Medical details for A.C.C.

Sir, — After being in an accident I am requested by the Accident Compensation Corporation to sign a form of consent to the giving of information by a medical practitioner, and the request is for general information about my whole state of health, past and present. I find it impossible to get a look at my own records with my G.P., and I cannot see him allowing the request, as the information is privileged. What about civil rights, about divulging other than the specific injury or condition that one suffers? Why request information that is not relevant to an injury or condition? Should my G.P. refuse such a request, what then? — Yours, etc., G. WILDE. June 24, 1985.

[Mr P. N. Heidenstrom, public relations manager of the Accident Compensation Corporation, replies: “The corporation would prefer not to comment on individual cases, especially without further details. Under the provisions of the Accident Compensation Act, the corporation requires only enough information to establish that a claimant’s injury was caused by accident and was not the result of a preexisting condition.”]
