Trucks used in farmers’ protest
NZPA-AAP Canberra A convoy of semi-trailers blowing their horns moved like huge mooing cows past Canberra’s Parliament House yesterday as part of the farmers’ protest outside the tax summit conference.
The trucks, decked out with banners protesting against possible fuel price rises, drew roars of appreciation from the farmers. Traffic was stopped in some places. Before the convoy arrived, the farmers had spilled across the road from the lawns of Parliament House. They gathered on the steps, where policemen pleaded on megaphones that
they pull back to the other side of the road. The police estimated that about 15,000 farmers demonstrated. Various people addressed the gathering, including the senior vice-president of the Livestock and Grain. Producers’ Association, Mr Michael Tooth, the Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke, and the president of the National Farmers’ Federation, Mr lan McLachlan. The farmers then marched about five kilometres from Parliament to the Treasury office and across Commonwealth Bridge. They then returned to their buses and went home.
