Ice rescue start soon

PA Wellington A Soviet icebreaker on its way to the Antarctic to rescue the ice-bound research ship Mikhail Somov arrived at Wellington yesterday. The 9500-ton Vladivostok will take on fuel and provisions before setting off later this week. The icebreaker will attempt to break the ice around the Mikhail Somov and lead it out of the area where it has been trapped since mid-March with 53 crew members on board. A Soviet Embassy spokesman said that if the Vladivostok could not break through the ice-mass it would approach the research ship and maintain communication with its helicopter.
