Brawl at hotel

PA Auckland Six people were arrested after a week-end brawl in a Waiwera hotel in which two people were injured. “It was a miracle no-one was severely injured,” said the hotel manager, Mr Jeff Poole, last evening. He said that glasses, bottles, tables and chairs flew round the public bar.

Mr Poole said that about 12 men began to intimidate young people who were drinking together. When one of the young people was assaulted, the group of men “just went berserk.” Mr Poole added: “It was a fierce melee, which must have gone on for a couple of minutes. A couple of glasses actually dug into the wall and a couple of chairs were

broken because they were thrown so hard.”

A woman caught in the cross-fire needed stitches to a leg wound, and one man had a badly bitten finger. Other patrons suffered bruises. The police arrested six people at another hotel later in the evening. They have been charged with disorderly behaviour and assault.
