Auckland pair’s yacht missing

PA Auckland An Auckland couple nearing the end of a three-year yacht voyage around the world are overdue in a remote area of the South Pacific. The couple, Mr Larry Rayner, and his wife, Fleur, both in their early 30s, were last seen at the Galapagos Islands on April 24 at the start of a voyage to the Marquesas Islands in their 10m yacht Mainstay. Mrs Rayner’s brother-in-law, Mr Neil Burson, of Devonport, Auckland, returned yesterday after more than three weeks in Tahiti organising searches for the yacht.

Air and sea searches conducted by the French Navy and Air Force failed to find any trace of the yacht, and Mr Burson said it had been almost impossible to contact anyone on the Galapagos Islands.

He said an Air New Zealand plane picked up an emergency locator beacon signal near French Polynesia on June 14, but a subsequent six-hour search failed to find the source.

Relatives of the Rayners yesterday met the member of Parliament for North Shore, Mr George Gair, to seek help from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in contacting the Galapagos Islands.
