Afghanistan
Sir,—H. F. Newman (June 28) sees a vaguely sinister Left-wing link between your Afghanistan editorial, your “Junior Press” story on the Soviet part in World War 11, and criticism of our Government’s performance. He fears such insidious Leftist propaganda and that opposition to it could mean “jail or a lunatic asylum.” His use of this last archaic term matches his outdated thinking. Soviet publications on the last war invariably mention, gratefully, the money and equipment lent or given by Britain and America between 1942-44 but
emphasise it amounted to only 4 per cent of their own vast output. It is indisputable that the German invaders of Russia lost 80 per cent of their armed forces and 75 per cent of their equipment there. How could it have been otherwise when up to 270 German divisions fought on the Russian front, but only up to 46 divisions on all other fronts combined?—Yours, etc., M. T. MOORE. June 28, 1985.
