Nuclear-free zones

Sir,—Proponents of nuclear-free zones create false expectations in the minds of many. No invention that man has ever devised has been “wished” out of existence, so citizens will be tempted to put the nuclear issue aside as finished. A position, akin to Switzerland/ Sweden, of neutrality will no longer work in the event of nuclear conflict. Therefore, to make our voices heard, we must work through alliances to get our message across. Peaceful implications are conveniently ignored. Trading by nuclear-powered vessels is overlooked, as is power generation now that many of our rivers are recreational or fully developed in terms of electricity. What will hospitals and universities do with their present radiation equipment? Jim McLay’s policy statement of February 18 (available to anyone who is interested) is the best position for New Zealand. The Luddite approach is not good enough. Only prolonged thought, planning and work will succeed.—Yours, etc., JOHN BATEMAN. Ahaura, June 26, 1985.
