$65,000 for painting

PA Auckland A Charles Blomfield work, which for decades languished in the obscurity of a Melbourne school, has fetched $65,000, believed to be a record price for a New Zealand painting.

An Auckland art dealer, Mr Grahame Chote, said he bought the 125 cm by 75cm oil painting, “The Mountain’s Crown,” in Melbourne

in November and had just sold it to a New Zealand financier living in Britain. The previous record for a New Zealand work was $56,000 for a painting by Frances Hodgkins. The collector, who did not wish to be named, would take delivery of the painting when he returned to New Zealand in October, said Mr Chote.
