Nemery demoted
NZPA-Reuter Cairo The ousted Sudanese President, Jaafar Nemery, has been stripped of his military rank and is considered to’ be a deserter by the country’s Army leaders, the Middle East News Agency reports. It quoted a statement by Sudan’s State Radio Omdur-
man as saying that Mr Nemery, who held the rank of field-marshal when he was overthrown in a military coup on April 6, faced other charges for not returning a machine-gun he had in his possession. Mr Nemery, who was ousted while in Cairo en route home from a visit to
Washington, has lived in the Egyptian capital since. Egypt’s President, Mr Hosni Mubarak, once Nemery’s main Arab ally, visited Sudan last week and said that he had no plans to extradite the former leader to be tried for what Sudan’s new rulers say are crimes against the people.
