Directors criticise Thatcher

NZPA-Reuter London Britain’s business leaders criticised the Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher, yesterday for allowing taxation and public spending to exceed what they said were tolerable limits. “The Government came into office determined to cut public spending — and has seen it rise by 15 per cent in real terms,” said a message to Mrs Thatcher from the Institute of Directors.

In its message to her before a special Cabinet meeting today, the 1.0. D. said that the Conservative Government was no nearer to curbing public spending or reducing taxation than it was before its re-election in 1983.

“The 1.0. D. believes that the spending and taxation burden for a fragile economy like Britain’s has now passed its tolerable limits,” the message said.
