PA Auckland The leading apprentice. Shane Dye, will ride for a Sydney stable after the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie. Dye, aged 18, has served all but a month of his fouryear apprenticeship with the trainer Dave O’Sullivan at Matamata. O’Sullivan yesterday described Dye’s move to the Rosehill stable of Brian Smith as “a great opportunity for a young man with no ties.” Dye has ridden 49 winners this season and 149 altogether, his best being the , Lion Avondale Cup on Cariere in December. Brian Smith, a New Zealander, became especially well known as the trainer of Balmerino.
