Women’s refuges
Sir,—Your editorial of May 27 ridicules the “abuser must pay” policy of the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges. For crimes against women the only just system of reparation is that men should pay. Violence against women reflects the power structure of our society. Men have that power — politically, socially, and economically, in our institutions and in our personal relationships. All men, as a part of that power structure, have collective responsibility for abuses of women. Perhaps a so-called “divisive and discriminatory” system of taxation, which costs men for the consequences of their collective actions, will encourage some men to start expressing their disapproval of such blatant oppressive behaviour as woman-battering and rape. Until
the Government comes up with more realistic funding, then women must continue to point out possible ways of attaining finance.—Yours, etc. F. TURNER. May 29, 1985.
