National Council of Women

Sir, — I disagree with Judy M. Waters’ description of the National Council of Women. In my association with N.C.W., covering well over 20 years, I have represented two associations, neither a church group. I had to work very hard to gain acceptance for one. I have found all delegates get a fair hearing, and if an organisation believes in its aims it should continue to strive for their acceptance regardless of defeat, inevitable at times. Obviously though, the larger the organisation, the greater its voting power. Less financial organisations should raise funds to cover the cost of full entitlement of delegation. Some delegates pay their own dues to lessen the cost for their organisations. Of the assertion that the executive is “so heavily laden with representatives of church groups and establishment organisations” I can only assure Judy Waters that the majority of approximately 54 organisations must have wanted it that way. — Yours, etc., N. P. HAYNES. May 29, 1985.
