Forest policy

Sir, — The Director-General of Forests, Mr Kirkland. (“The Press," May 28) says that he is distressed and angered. However, the Forest Service has no-one to blame but itself for the lack of public confidence in the administration of native forests. Indeed Sir CharlesFleming declared at the environment summit held at Parliament in March that “New Zealanders have no confidence in the record of the promises of the developer departments." This record includes the rejection of almost 90 per cent of Wildlife Service reserve recommendations since 1971. Violations of the 1975 Indigenous Forest policy now amount to more than 14,000 hectares (31.000 acres). Blatant disregard of the vast majority of public submissions on forest

management plans certainly has not assisted credibility. When the Government makes its decision on environment administration it must ensure that all natural lands, including native forests, are included in a nature conservancy. — Yours, etc., S. K. F. ERICKSEN. May 28, 1985.
