Peacemaking role for N.Z.
Sir, — At last, with H. F. Newman’s letter today someone not endorsing neutrality writes with some understanding of the subject. H. F. Newman notes from history how (even the most rapacious of) aggressors can be induced to leave intact small neutral nations offering useful international services and trade. Such neutrality over 570 years has enabled the Swiss to cope more successfully in strategic, diplomatic, and economic terms than any other nationality in Europe’s troubled history. When Mr Newman takes the time to read what Larry Ross and I have written on “positive” neutrality for New Zealand he will grasp how what he has learned about Europe can be adapted here. New Zealand, well regarded by all nations and blocs, is arguably the best suited developed Pacific nation to become a universally trustworthy diplomatic and electronic centre in the fastbudding information era. — Yours, etc.,
J. GALLAGHER. May 28, 1985.
