N.Z.’s anti-nuclear policy

Sir,—Contrary to the implication in your leading article of May 22, to many people the Government’s antinuclear policy is not at all alarming. it is a breath of common sense in the madness of nuclear confrontation. On the other hand, a very alarming feature of superpower relationships recently has been the escalation of the arms race by the Americans and their unwillingness to seek greater rapport with the Russians. Do we wish to be tied to the U.S.A, in a military alliance when the judgment of the partner is so awry? Re-

member that we would have no say in the nuclear weapons policies of the alliance. A.N.Z.U.S. has been rather one-sided in the past. Would that change if the treaty is renegotiated? At least we should be free to judge who are our enemies.—Yours, etc.,

COLIN BURROWS. May 23, 1985.
