Minister misused powers —doctors
PA Auckland The Minister of Health, Dr Bassett, used a section of the Social Security Act to control doctors, the High Court in Auckland was told yesterday. Mr P. B. Temm. Q.C., said that section 117 of the act had been used for an ulterior motive. For many years, he said, there had been conflict between Dr Bassett and the medical profession. From the time Dr Bassett took office it was clear he was going to exercise fiscal control over doctors, said Mr Temm. Before Mr Justice Vautier
is a notice of motion for the review of the general medical services benefit for children. Three Auckland doctors allege that Dr Bassett misused his power in introducing new criteria for the scheme earlier in the year. The plaintiffs are Michael Henderson Cooper, David Matthew De Lacey, and Thomas Harry Marshall. They are represented by Mr Temm and Miss Jane Lo-vell-Smith. Messrs D. P. Neazor, Q.C., and R. B. Squire appear for Dr Bassett. The case will continue today.
