Govt extends subsidies

PA Wellington The Government granted yesterday a nine-month extension to its $1 for $2 subsidy for new water and sewerage reticulation by local bodies.

The change means that communities not yet connected to a mains water supply or to sewers can apply for the subsidy before March 31 next. The Minister of Local Government, Dr Bassett, in announcing the change, said that a few small communities had been excluded from the subsidy by the previous Government. They should have the opportunity to get the subsidies in the interests of public health, he said.
