Message in sand brings rescuers
NZPA-AAP Darwin A man was rescued yesterday from a remote beach on the Northern Territory after scrawling a message in the sand to attract attention. A coastal surveillance aircraft saw the message, “Help, man overboard, deckhand lost” on Monday near the mouth of the Daly River, about 120 km southwest of Darwin.
Earlier the aircraft had spotted a man’s body float-
ing offshore. The police said the two men were believed to have been fishing in the area for barramundi. A police launch left Darwin and on Monday morning retreived the body of a man, aged about 35, and picked up the survivor. A dinghy, split from bow to stern, was found partly submerged near a larger vessel, the Ski, believed to have been used by the two men.
