Busloads of police deal with a dozen
PA Dunedin Five busloads of policemen, most flown in from Auckland, descended on Carisbrook yesterday, and dealt capably with a dozen protesters, and their dog, at the England-Otago rugby match.
Carrying two placards and a banner, the protesters offered pamphlets to rugby fans featuring comments on South Africa by Graham Mourie, Clive Lloyd, Derek Pringle, and others. There was no trouble. Earlier, however, police arrested seven protesters who ejected two workers from the Otago Rugby Union’s offices and barricaded themselves in. The five men and two women had intended holding out for the duration of the match but the "siege" ended in an hour when the police forced three doors to get at them.
One person was arrested while setting out an antitour banner on the roof of the central city building. All will face charges of trespass.
