Accident report prepared

A report has been sent to the Commissioner of Police, Mr Ken Thompson, on the fatal accident involving an off-duty policeman in Ferry Road on Saturday evening.

Chief Inspector Maitland Lawrence said yesterday that it was routine for a report to be made on any fatal accident involving the police.

He prepared the report on behalf of the Christchurch police chief, Deputy Assistant Commissioner George Twentyman. A car driven by Constable Nigel Bartlett, aged 22, struck and killed an elderly couple in Ferry Road outside St Anne’s Catholic Church. He was given a blood-alcohol test after the accident.
