Sumner teams lead in squash
The two Vistalite Sumner teams share the lead after the latest round in the men’s open grade inter-club squash competition last evening. Both Sumner club teams got the better of a hard-fought five-setter to claim victory in their respective contests. The Sumner I team was in particular trouble with Linwood’s John Knight holding match ball against a gasping John Christensen at 8-4 in the third game. However, in a typically “gutsy” effort Christensen climbed back to win in five games. In the final game both players were very tired and slipped occasionally in the back of the court which was damp with perspiration. For Sumner 11, Blair Michelson had a tremendous battle with Wayne Seebeck (Donnell Christchurch), both players making some miraculous retrieves. David Crow Suburbs thrust itself into the lead in the women’s open grade with a decisive win over the previous front-runner, Hunter Lounge Suites Linwood. Kathy Hargreaves and Raewyn Young, for Suburbs, had straight game wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 playing positions Last year’s champion side, Mount Pleasant, made its first victory of the round a commanding one, securing a clean sweep against Donnell Jewellers Christchurch. Merle Holland came out of retirement o boost her team. Points:—
