Better diabetes test kit devised at Green Lane
PA Auckland A diabetes-testing device developed at Green Lane Hospital has been commercially released in Auckland. The test, known as fructosamine Roche, is a diagnostic kit which its developers claim provides a more reliable and convenient means of screening than traditional methods. The test was discovered by a Green Lane research group headed by a chemical pathologist, Dr John Baker.
He said it was a more accurate, reliable and cheap test than other methods, and provided much information about diabetes.
Dr Baker said only a small blood sample was needed from a patient. The level of sugar attached to the blood proteins was then measured.
He said the procedure could be used both for management of people with established diabetes and as a screening test. Doctors were enthusiastic about the test.
which had been used extensively in Auckland before the commercial release of the kit. Funds for the research initially came from the Development Finance Corporation’s applied technology programme. Dr Baker said that in mid-1983 he and the corporation signed an agreement with the Swiss firm, Hoffman-La Roche, providing for worldwide rights to develop and market the test:
