Phone-call to check on fire
NZPA-AAP London A pensioner, Miss Mafeon Woodruff, dashed back into ber blazing caravan home when the telephone rang, and found that it was the operator checking that her 999 emergency call was genuine. The “Sun” newspaper reports that Miss Woodruff, aged 69, fled again, seconds before the caravan was engulfed in flames. Operators had been asked to check on 999 calls after a spate of fire hoaxes in the area. ’ A fire Brigade spokesman said it was incredible the woman was not hurt. “She walked through the blazing lounge to get to the telephone and then came back,” he said. Miss Woodruff said: “The flames were all over the caravan — it was very fierce. When the phone rang I just answered it. “I didn’t think what I was doing.”
