Defence costs
Sir,—An extra $2OO million a year for defence. Well perhaps I would not mind if I thought it would do any good. New Zealand, until this “peace-loving” Government came on the scene had an extremely effective and cheap defence arrangement with our ally, the United States of America. Now we are on our own and we are going to have to pay for it. But to put things in perspective S2OOM is not really that much. The Soviets, in 1981 alone, spent three times that amount supporting Western peace movements. Isn’t that a consolation?—Yours, etc., N. K. PRATTLEY. May 14, 1985.
