Support for theatre

Sir, — In “The Press” report of May 9 of the Christchurch Theatre Trust’s annual meeting, the board’s chairman, Mr David Page, states he “hoped that the Arts Council would use the funds it was given to build up existing institutions rather than funding new activities. Only then could the Court and other theatres increase the wages of its staff to realistic levels.” The new activities presumably are Circa and New Depot, of Wellington, Working Title, of Auckland, and React, of Christchurch, who are all in the process of applying to the Arts Council for funding. That these groups exist is evidence that growth cannot be contained within the existing funding structure. Naturally these groups will seek to form their own identity and have the right to pursue their own interests, including the right to seek funding from the Arts Council, and are not responsible for internal problems of established theatres. — Yours, etc., BRUCE GRAHAM.
