Tour refusal backing
PA Wellington The Wellington branch of the Public Service Association says it will support any members who refuse to broadcast sports commentaries of the All Black matches in South Africa.
This follows up the action of Radio New Zealand journalists in Wellington who wrote to the Broadcasting Corporation board asking that there be no broadcasting of the rugby matches in South Africa as sports events. It believes that the board will consider the tour coverage at the end of the month. The Wellington P.S.A. regional secretary, Mr Francis Wevers, said that the association was not making any recommendations to broadcasting members on what they should do about sports coverage. “Any decision is up to the members but the union will support them,” he said. When asked if that meant the association was in principle prepared to support censorship, Mr Wevers said that there was no suggestion of any union pressure to modify news coverage. Mr Wevers said, however, that sports commentaries were different, being entertainment.
