Refuellers’ row ends

A dispute which led to a 48-hour stoppage by Air New Zealand aircraft refuellers early last month has been settled.

The strike ended on April 10 after Air New Zealand and the Engineers’ Union agreed to refer the dispute to a conciliation meeting. The strike caused some disruption to flights on April 9. The union’s secretary, Mr Rex Jones said in Christchurch yesterday that the conciliator had upheld the union claim for parity between Air New Zealand refuellers and oil company refuellers doing similar work.

The decision meant an increase of about 22c an hour on top of the $7.02 an hour the refuellers were getting, he said.
