New date for Clifford Plate
PA Auckland The Clifford Plate, one of Ellerslie’s oldest established weight-for-age events, will be given a new place in the Auckland Racing Club’s summer programme. For the first time, and it has been run variously on each of the other three days, the race will be held on the opening day of the cup meeting. To begin with, in 1926, the Clifford Plate was run on the fourth day of the A.R.C. summer meeting, where it remained until 1957-58, when, with the rearrangement of the programme and Cup and Derby in particular, it was shifted to the second day. Since 1977, the race has
had its turn on the third day of the meeting. The latest change, which has been urged on the Auckland Racing Club for some time, is set for the 1985-86 Cup meeting. Without this latest shift the Clifford Plate could have been lost. Racegoers have memories of such great battles as when Beau Vite edged out Royal Chief (1941), Lord Chancellor shaded Te Hinemoa (1945), Beaumaris nosed out Lord Moss (1950) and recollections of winners like Cuddle, Kindergarten, Red Jester, Somerset Fair, Fair Chance, Tatua (twice, in 1965 and 1968) and, more recently, Bardall and Uncle Remus.
