Young lawyers want better pay

PA Wellington Young lawyers employed by law firms in Wellington and Hutt Valley have made a move for better pay and conditions. About 150 lawyers. have met in Wellington and decided to start negotiations with their employers. Law clerks and solicitors with up to two years experience and at least five years at university earn $lO,OOO to $15,000 under the Clerical Workers’ Award. Previously, the prospect of a partnership compensated for the lean years, but as this is no longer eventu-

ating for the majority, lawyers wanted recognition of the skills they had. "Now there is absolutely no guarantee that if you stick around there will be anything,” said a solicitor, Ms Mary Peters. “One of every two years’ intakes will be made a partner — perhaps one in 10.” The lawyers plan to approach local law firms to negotiate a voluntary binding agreement covering pay, recognition of overtime, and expenses such as bar admission and professional course fees.
