Forest and bird society
Sir,—l would remind Eric Bennett (May 3) that there might not be any “wild nature” left for the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society to take a specialised concern of if it took no interest in nuclear matters. There are points that require clarification. The executive of the society passed a motion at a recent meeting on the issue, not the policy-, making council, which is still to discuss it. Second, the motion read: “That as ecologists believing in the imminence of the threat to all life posed by the possibility of a nuclear winter, the executive opposes nuclear weapons and their presence
in New Zealand.” Regarding the question of “nuclear politics,” all New Zealand political parties have stated they are opposed to nuclear weapons in New Zealand.—Yours, etc.,
GERARD HUTCHING, Editor, “Forest and Bird.” May 3, 1985.
Sir,—l was amazed to read Eric Bennett’s suggestion (“The Press,” May 3) that the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society should not be concerned with nuclear issues. Any person or organisation professing deep regard for the natural environment or human heritage of this planet, should support all efforts to reduce the chance of nuclear holocaust. — Yours, etc., JUDITH ROBINSON, Franz Josef. May 6, 1985.
